The man who inspired one of the most popular comedy shows, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, is no more. Taarak Mehta (87) passed away last morning in Ahmedabad following a prolonged illness.
A well-known writer, Mehta was known for his column, Duniya Ne Undha Chasma, which became the basis of the comedy show. He went on to write six more popular plays and is the author of over 80 books. He received the Padma Shri in 2015. Besides writing, the humourist also had a penchant for acting and had performed in several of his own plays.
When mid-day spoke to actor Dilip Joshi, who plays Jethalal in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, he said, "He was a legendary writer with a great sense of humour. During the initial part of his career, he worked on several Gujarati plays, both as writer and actor. His comic timing was always spot on. His plays would leave an indelible
mark on your mind. I had the privilege of working with him in a play called Sakha Sahiyara in 1998."*Friends at his funeral yesterday morning. Pic/Nirav Trivedi*
Joshi recalled the time Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah launched in 2008. Back then, Mehta was a resident of Mumbai. "I would meet him quite often and even after he moved to Ahmedabad. It was always a pleasure to see him. His health started deteriorating in the last year. But even when he was weak, his humour was top-notch. He'd crack one-liners that would leave us in splits. He spoke less, but whatever he said was almost always witty," Joshi added.
Did Mehta ever watch the popular show? "He never offered me any feedback, but I am sure he spoke at length with our producer when the rights to his column were acquired," Joshi said. Taarak Mehta Ka..'s producer, Asit Kumar Modi has been getting calls since the news of the demise broke.*Dilip Joshi*

For someone who has faith in Trump's ideologies despite the furore over his extremist viewpoints, the Kansas shooting last week came as a shock. A 34-year-old Indian techie, Srinivas Kuchibhotla, was shot dead in the suspected hate crime; his friend, Alok Masadani sustained injuries. A dedication to ardent lovers of the sport, the track, titled 10 Saal Aapke Naam, has been created by Bollywood music composers Salim-Sulaiman, and sung by Benny Dayal.
*Salim Merchant*
compares the task of making a peppy and relatable cricket anthem to "making a hit Bollywood number". He says, "Before we started composing the song, we were sure it had to be a celebration of cricket and reflect the love that people have for the game. The concept of dedicating this season to admirers of the sport is interesting. We wanted to make a hummable song, which people could dance to. "But in the eyes of the audience, it is the righteous thing because they connect with the emotion that's why 'Sarkar' becomes more powerful as a leader."
"'Sarkar 3' is full of grey characters. There is no such hero or heroine or a villain as such. All of them strongly believe in their own convictions," he added.

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma says his upcoming movie 'Sarkar 3' doesn't have anything that will upset the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief Pahlaj Nihalani.
Varma is back with the third part of his successful crime-drama franchise 'Sarkar 3' featuring megastar Amitabh Bachchan.
When asked if he fears any trouble from the CBFC, he said, "No not at all. I don't think 'Sarkar 3' has any material which should anger Pahlaj Nihalani."
Recently, Nihalani had reportedly said that if 'Sarkar 3' is based on Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray then the makers need to get a no-objection certificate from the family or else put a disclaimer that the film is a work of fiction.
"They (CBFC) have some kind of regulations. In case they have a reason to believe that this (film) could be based on a real life character, so just as a safety measure (we need) to get a disclaimer, nothing beyond that," Varma said.

*Mumbai:* Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, whose 'Sarkar 3', the third installment of his political thriller series, is all set to release, says that the film is full of grey characters, none of which can be called as a hero or a villain.
Asked about if Yami Gautam's character is of a vamp, Varma told media at the trailer launch here: "There is no hero or villain in the film. All the characters are quite grey and strong believer of their own convictions. So it would be wrong to point out any character as a positive or negative one."

As the film talks about politics, crime and differences of ideology, Varma, asked if it was a a challenge to strike a balance of reality without glorifying crime, said: "Crime is a legal term. *Los Angeles:* The forthcoming remake of the film "Beauty and the Beast", starring Luke Evans and Emma Watson, will, in a first for the Disney film company, feature a gay aspect, the movie's director Bill Condon said.
Condon said the character Belle's suitor Gaston has an admirer in the form of his manservant LeFou (essayed by Josh Gad) in the musical film, reports independent.co.uk.
"LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston," Condon told Attitude magazine.
"He's confused about what he wants. It's somebody who's just realising that he has these feelings. And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it. And that's what has its pay-off at the end, which I don't want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie," he added.
A trailer clip released for the film showed LeFou heaping lavish praise on Gaston who seems to be enjoying the attention.
The storyline will be a side plot to the main story about Belle (played by Emma Watson) and her relationship with the Beast (Dan Stevens).
"When they offered me Belle, I just felt the character resonated with me so much more than Cinderella did," Watson said.

Who doesn't want a good boss? And when it is Bollywood's Mr Perfectionist, anyone would jump at the opportunity to work with him.
Sanya Malhotra and Fatima Sana Sheikh not only got the chance to play Aamir Khan's daughters in Dangal, but also bagged an internship with his production house, to learn more about tricks of the trade.*Sanya Malhotra*
"In January 2016, we wrapped up the film's shoot and didn't have anything to do," recalls Sanya. "So, Fatima and I decided to go on an India darshan. That's when AK [that's how they address Aamir] asked us if we would want to intern with him. For a moment, we went totally blank, but then nodded at the offer," she adds.
Interning with Aamir was not an easy task since they had to be with him all the time, and on their toes. During their year-long stint as Aamir's interns, Sanya and Fatima accompanied the actor to meetings of his NGO, Paani Foundation, which is working towards a drought-free Maharashtra. They also tagged along for the shoot of his latest ad on women empowerment, prep work for Thugs of Hindoostan with Amitabh Bachchan, and post-production of Secret Superstar.
"People know him as a brilliant actor, but we got to know how brilliant he is as a person. We got a sneak peek into his life. It is encouraging and motivating to learn everything from someone so talented and experienced," says Sanya.
Describing a normal day during their internship period, she says they would report to his office by 9 am; Aamir was working on the post production of Dangal then. "On some days, we would sit for almost five to six hours at Pritam's [music composer] office working on the background score. Later, we would go with Aamir for dubbing sessions, which would be followed by a meeting with the music or editing team. We would return home by 10 pm. When we went to work, we would listen to stories of how Aamir worked till 4 am."

Their most famous resident, Sunny Pawar, 8, returned this morning from Los Angeles after being at the centre of much-talked about attention at the 89th Academy Awards. Garth Davis' 'Lion', a film about an Indian boy adopted by Australian parents, saw stellar performances by him and the likes of Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel.*Sunny is received at the airport by the media. The airport, and later, his neighbourhood was buzzing with journalists, keen to catch Sunny for a moment.*Sunny Pawar at Oscar's red carpet*
Party workers of a political outfit that his father, Dilip, is affiliated with, waited to give him a hero's welcome. His neck strung with garlands, mouth stuffed with sweets, Sunny was lifted into the air to cheers, much the same way Oscar host Jimmy Kimmel did, making the iconic moment a favourite with international paparazzi.*Sunny Pawar with Triple H*
His mother, Vasu, who in an exclusive interview to mid-day had expressed concern that he was homesick, was overwhelmed to see him after long. "It feels wonderful. I am glad to be back with my mother. I can finally go to school and play with my siblings," Sunny told mid-day.*Sunny Pawar with Jackie Chan*
About the Oscar moment, he said he felt like a star when Kimmel lifted him. "I didn't understand much of what he [Kimmel] was saying but everyone's reaction gave me confidence. I saw my father looking happy and Dev bhaiya [Dev Patel] was smiling. I knew this was huge," he added, suddenly asking, "How many people across the world saw me, you think?"*Sunny Pawar with Dev Patel*
It's not just the awards night that made Sunny's time in the US special. He met dignitaries like Barack Obama, movie superstars including Jackie Chan, and "a tall uncle" [presumably Samuel Jackson], who gave him a hug and said he will go far. But his favourite moment was when he met his idol, WWF star The Rock. "It was my dream to meet Rock, and I watched a wrestling match live," he said.

Vasu thinks her son is fortunate to have met international names despite his humble roots. "He'd always imitate Bollywood actors and participate in school plays, but we didn't think he'd come this far," she said.

His father and Pranav Sahni, production manager at Take One Productions, helped Sunny with translations on tour.
That he was always given Indian food made him feel at home. "I'd eat rice, dal, dosa and sambhar, but it reminded me of my mother's cooking," Sunny recalled.*Sunny Pawar with idol, WWF star The Rock*
His grandfather Bhima Pawar, 64, says his chawl has become famous because of Sunny. "We have strangers coming to ask us about his whereabouts. Though Lion is an English movie, everyone from the neighbourhood has gone and watched it for Sunny," he said.
